History of the Faimont GT
The Fairmont GT was built in Australia and assembled in South Africa which makes these cars so unique. Here is a brief history on how they came about:
The American Falcon was introduced in South Africa in 1960 and quietly discontinued in approximately 1963. Until 1969 certain American style Fords were sourced in CKD (Complete Knock Down form) from Canada which supplied Commonwealth countries including South Africa. In 1969 there was a switch to Australia as a source of the American style cars for Ford South Africa and the Australian Falcon was introduced with the previously unknown Fairmont name. The American style Galaxies were replaced with Australian Fords badged as Fairlane’s. The XT 6-cylinder Australian Falcon with round taillights was the first to appear, followed by the XW about a year later.
The Falcons were re-badged Fairmont’s due to the Canadian sourced Falcons of 1960-1962 had such a bad reputation for reliability. This name change extended to the like of utilities’ which were called Ranchero’s. This was so they wouldn’t be associated with the US Falcons of ’60-’62. With the sales and racing success in Australia, Ford of South Africa knew the Fairmont GT would sell like hot cakes!
A common question is: “Are they really a GT? How can you tell?”
Answer: Yes a Fairmont GT is a genuine GT. The 1970, 1971 and 1972 Fairmont GT was manufactured in Australia at the Geelong Ford Australia plant as a 54H GT 4 door sedan component set. The Australian built Falcon GT was also manufactured on the same production line. The Fairmont’s were destined for assembly in Port Elizabeth while the Australian Falcons were sent to Broadmeadows (JG) for assembly. Fairmont’s assembled in South Africa had the source and assembly code “MS” and all GT’s had a body designated as “33”. The Australian GT Falcon is actually based on a Fairmont so you could say the South African Fairmont GT is truer to its name.
