1977 Holden HX Monaro GTS Sedan – 308, 5 Litre V8

Offered for sale is this 1977 Holden HX Monaro GTS Sedan, finished in it’s factory Antelope exterior colour with Chamois trim.

Built in June 1977 at the Adelaide plant, this is a genuine HX8WQ69 Monaro GTS Sedan, originally specified with the L31 5.0-litre V8, M41 Turbo 400 automatic transmission and 3.08:1 rear axle.

The vehicle underwent a restoration approximately 15 years ago and still presents very well today. The paintwork is of high quality, the interior trim has been redone, and the car has been maintained as a usable classic rather than simply a static display vehicle.

It runs and drives well, features automatic transmission, working air conditioning, and also power steering.

Engine & Chassis History

The vehicle does not retain its original matching-numbers engine.

It is currently fitted with a period-correct 5.0-litre Holden V8, engine number: QT863174

The V8 was rebuilt approximately 15 years ago. Documentation on file includes an engine receipt from a dealer dating back to the 1990s — while it’s exact provenance isn’t fully confirmed, it is not believed to be a factory Holden warranty exchange engine. The rebuild includes:

• Heads reconditioned with new guides and valve springs; VN valves fitted and cut to run on premium unleaded fuel (machine work by Rams)
• A9L connecting rods, bored .40″ over
• ACL 304 pistons, fully balanced
• New camshaft and lifters
• Rollmaster timing chain
• Factory-style thermostat retained, with the balance of the engine left standard
• Sanden air-conditioning compressor added at a later date, keeping the air conditioning in full working order
• Paired with the proven Turbo 400 automatic transmission and factory power steering, this combination delivers the classic GTS driving experience with everyday comfort and ease of driving, backed by a thoroughly refreshed bottom end and top end.

The chassis was also replaced at some stage more than 30 years ago. The current chassis number is: BHX24716S

Ownership History

The exact ownership chain isn’t fully documented, however records confirm three owners from a 1993 sale onward, including the current owner.
