Some cars are simply vehicles. Others become part of someone’s life, and this Karmann Ghia is unmistakably the latter. Its current owner discovered it in San Diego, California, back in 2008, while touring the west coast of the United States on a Volkswagen safari in search of classic Karmann Ghias. The moment he saw it, he knew it was something special. He bought it on the spot, shipped it home to Australia, and for the past 18 years has meticulously cared for, cherished, and maintained it. This is a car that has never simply been stored, it has been loved.
A car with Pedigree
One of the standout features of this Ghia is the depth of it’s documentation. It comes complete with its original books, original registration papers, and even the original California number plate that was fitted when the owner purchased it in San Diego, a rare and evocative piece of provenance for a car of this age.
A ground-up restoration, with a personal touch.
The restoration behind this car is equally impressive. It underwent a complete ground-up rebuild carried out by a United States Air Force engineer named Martino. His craftsmanship is evident throughout, and if you look closely at the beautiful wooden sports steering wheel, you’ll find his delicate engraved signature, a subtle but special reminder of the man who brought this iconic Volkswagen back to life.
An automotive Icon
The Karmann Ghia Cabriolet is more than a classic Volkswagen, it’s a genuine automotive icon. Its elegant styling earned it worldwide recognition as the car driven by Agent 99 in the classic television series Get Smart. Decades later, it appeared again on the silver screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, starring Brad Pitt.
